Molecule ManMolecule Man | Art by Simon Dominic
If you're a fan of the Marvel Comics, this set is just for you. There are so many memorable comic book characters that haven't yet made it into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but there are a ton of cards and characters in Marvel Super Heroes set that we're all excited to see. Here 's what EDHREC writers are putting in their decks.
Josh Nelson
Josh is adding Thor, God of ThunderThor, God of Thunder to their Auntie Blyte, Bad InfluenceAuntie Blyte, Bad Influence deck. They said, "The deck thrives on noncreature spells to make Auntie Blyte more and more huge, and Thor likes those a lot. But on top of that, Auntie Blyte also really enjoys Equipment that gives her lifelink, so to have Thor act as recursion for those cards seriously ticks many important boxes for me." Targeting yourself with Thor's ability is actually really neat tech here.
It's not the only card from the set that Josh is adding to their Auntie Blyte deck: "Panther HabitPanther Habit, from the Commander precons. Another Equipment card that can protect Auntie Blyte from being the victim of her own mass-damaging spells? Sign me up!" This card is such an interesting little deterrent against blocks against Auntie Blyte because it makes her pop for more. It also puts opponents between a rock and a hard place. It's a pseudo VigorVigor for decks without green.
The last card they want to add to their decks is The Ten RingsThe Ten Rings. "I would like to put it into Daretti, Scrap SavantDaretti, Scrap Savant (provided I find the prerequisite cut in the deck first). The reason is a bit of a meme overall but I am already running The One RingThe One Ring and to have eleven rings plus Sol RingSol Ring would be my idea of living the dream." I love a deck with a little flavor and an inside joke.
Owain Roberts
Owain is starting off with the kind of sass I like, "I'm eyeing up Mjölnir, Hammer of ThorMjölnir, Hammer of Thor for Lara Croft, Tomb RaiderLara Croft, Tomb Raider. The deck sorely needs some more interaction, and this provides it. And yes, a Tomb Raider is definitely worthy of the Hammer." Being able to exile Mjölnir with Lara Croft is pretty neat. Giving her double strike is nice as well because as Owain mentions, she is worthy.
"For my last deck, featuring Nathan Drake, Treasure HunterNathan Drake, Treasure Hunter, I'm definitely looking to add Nico Minoru, RunawayNico Minoru, Runaway, but I'm torn between Black Widow, Super SpyBlack Widow, Super Spy and Klaw, Master of SoundKlaw, Master of Sound. I might add both, but I only have room for one for now. I've been trying to shift the deck as more of a "theft from exile" kind of deal, and this is part of that shakeup. I'm also flipping and flopping on Extract PowerExtract Power, so nothing solid yet."
I think Nico is really interesting because it'll ping for each spell from exile, but I might suggest Unstable AmuletUnstable Amulet for a cheaper option. I think Klaw guarantees its effect a little more readily than Black Widow, but both would be really interesting.
Kara Blinebry
Kara started with, "Extract PowerExtract Power is going into my Cormela, Glamour ThiefCormela, Glamour Thief deck. It basically functions as another Dream HarvestDream Harvest-y theft effect but it can actually make use of instant-speed interactive cards I might rip off of a player's deck." This is such a cool addition to this deck because of how much Cormela discounts instant and sorcery spells. Get a Training GroundsTraining Grounds in there and you're off to the races.
"Dismissive DenialDismissive Denial will be going into both Yorion, Sky NomadYorion, Sky Nomad and Cormela, Glamour ThiefCormela, Glamour Thief. This counterspell can just replace a land in a lot of cases, making the opportunity cost near zero. It gets my average mana value up for Cormela's Parker LuckParker Luck effects, and the flavor text is hilarious. Automatically going into most blue decks of mine that aren't trying to get the game over with in a hurry."
"Stark's IngenuityStark's Ingenuity is going into my Temmet, Naktamun's WillTemmet, Naktamun's Will Voltron deck. This Aura is sneakily a modal spell, where the primary effect that boosts Temmet's power and dramatically reduces the required effort to kill a player and the secondary effect is just a BraingeyserBraingeyser. That makes it great both in the early to mid game where I don't need help drawing cards and awesome to top deck in the late game where I need a little more juice to close things out." I agree a hundred percent with this. This addition is so sick for a deck that cares about drawing.
Mike Carrozza
Mike said, "Molecule ManMolecule Man in literally any deck that lets me loot or draw on my opponents' turns." I want to agree here, just because of how powerful the ability is, but six mana seems a little steep to slam it into any deck. And if you see a land as the card you draw, nothing happens. It's pretty rough, but in an Eldrazi deck, it could do something.
"Puppet Master, String PullerPuppet Master, String Puller’s going right into my Jeskai legendary goad deck for sure, let’s make some Treasures." This card might be the goad card so whatever the commander here is, I would recommend it.
"Kang PrimeKang Prime slots perfectly in my The Ninth DoctorThe Ninth Doctor/Clara OswaldClara Oswald Grixis upkeeps deck. I’ll be cheating plenty of stuff into play." Oh wow, yeah cheating upkeeps will make this very playable!
"Nico Minoru, RunawayNico Minoru, Runaway is just a slam dunk for from exile decks like my beloved fallen Prosper, Tome-BoundProsper, Tome-Bound but also my new pal Sanar, Innovative First-YearSanar, Innovative First-Year." Combo decks will love Nico, so it's no surprise to see Sanar in this lineup. Prosper was my thinking too, when I saw that card.
Brian Cain
Brian noted, "Molecule ManMolecule Man is nuts in my Belbe, Corrupted ObserverBelbe, Corrupted Observer Eldrazi deck, since he can come down as early as turn two and let me miracle Eldrazi on subsequent turns." Belbe Eldrazi would love a way to get Eldrazi even easier, so I agree wholeheartedly. "The Ten RingsThe Ten Rings also works great in that deck, I can use my resources to get it out early and get immediately refilled for more fun." Card draw is something we all need so no arguments from me, especially when Belbe can discount them.
"Mole Man, Moloid MasterMole Man, Moloid Master is worth looking at for The Gitrog MonsterThe Gitrog Monster, the tokens milling lands to draw more cards makes them more attractive than something like Rampaging BalothsRampaging Baloths." This card is the insane power creep of landfall decks striking again. It would be perfect for Gitrog.
"HYDRA Assault RobotHYDRA Assault Robot is another Reckless FireweaverReckless Fireweaver effect for my Rose, Cutthroat RaiderRose, Cutthroat Raider artifact aggro deck. Iron Man, Tony StarkIron Man, Tony Stark also gets the nod in that deck for obvious reasons." I agree; in any deck that's running "artifact enters"-effects, it would be worth adding. I like Fireweaver a little better because it hits everyone though.
Nicholas Lucchesi
Nicholas started with, "H.E.R.B.I.E. Scout UnitH.E.R.B.I.E. Scout Unit; Ultron, Artificial MalevolenceUltron, Artificial Malevolence; Castle DoomCastle Doom; and probably Jocasta, Automaton AvengerJocasta, Automaton Avenger to my colorless Iron Spider, Stark UpgradeIron Spider, Stark Upgrade deck." The ramp and card draw in H.E.R.B.I.E. might replace Sad Bot in the future. It's not as good in some ways, but it has fewer hoops and gives value a little more immediately. And it flies so putting counters on it with Iron Spider is relevant. Jocasta is just such a resilient attacker even from the grave. It's great in this deck.
"Political TriumphPolitical Triumph; Patriot, Shield WielderPatriot, Shield Wielder; and Night Nurse, Healer of HeroesNight Nurse, Healer of Heroes are all up for consideration for Arabella, Abandoned DollArabella, Abandoned Doll." Night Nurse and Patriot are good ways to get around the drawback of attacking with little old Arabella. If you can recur her after her trigger that same turn or make her hexproof in response to a removal spell, or even threaten it, you're doing well.
Ethan Coover
Ethan is starting with the Fantastic Four: "Mister Fantastic, Reed RichardsMister Fantastic, Reed Richards is going straight into my The Locust GodThe Locust God deck. I think the reason for that is pretty obvious." Does this just go infinite? Get back to me Ethan.
"Shang-Chi and the Ten RingsShang-Chi and the Ten Rings will fit well in my Oloro, Ageless AsceticOloro, Ageless Ascetic deck as well. The deck draws quite a few cards so triggering the last ability is doable in most circumstances." Anything that will gain more life will absolutely be good for an Oloro deck.
Conclusion
This set has a lot of heat. I wish it leaned less into mono-color dynamics for some of the legends, but we can't have it all. I wish Nico Minoru, RunawayNico Minoru, Runaway was a Rakdos commander and so was Puppet Master, String PullerPuppet Master, String Puller. Those were some cards I was rather excited about. What do you all think? Tell me! I'm @strixhavendropout on everything!
