<p>After all the spell-slinging and rounds of Mage's Tower of <a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/sos" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Secrets of Strixhaven</em></a> (SOS), it's time for summer break. And what better way to spend that time than with the summer blockbuster of <a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/msh"><em>Marvel Super Heroes</em></a> (MSH)!</p>
<p>The heroes and villains we all know and love, plus some very weird deep cuts, are here for action. I think we were all a little disappointed with how <em>Spider-Man</em> fared, but let's give this set a fair shot and see what powers Minotaurs can gain.</p>
<p>For those new to <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/author/the-minotaur-reviewer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">my reviews</a>, I analyze cards from the perspective of <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/minotaurs">Minotaur typal</a> and how they can be used in the various sub-strategies available, those currently being <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/aggro">Aggressive Combat</a>, <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/discard">Discard</a>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Magar of the Magic Strings" href="#" target="_blank">Magar</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> <a href="https://edhrec.com/commanders/magar-of-the-magic-strings/spellslinger">Big Spells</a>. Each has their own nuances, but all broadly rely on the same core Minotaur typal backbone.</p>
<p>So with that, let's assemble the Avengers and set out once more into New York City. Who knows, third time could be the charm.</p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Minotaur, Roxxon CEO" href="#" target="_blank">Minotaur, Roxxon CEO</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>
<p>Here he is. Move over <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Labyrinth Adversary" href="#" target="_blank">Labyrinth Adversary</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, we've got the real Minotaur now. It's literally his name.</p>

<p>This is such a cool design space for Minotaurs. <em>Theros Beyond Death</em> introduced the sacrifice theme for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Slaughter-Priest of Mogis" href="#" target="_blank">Minotaur typal</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and the Roxxon CEO puts that into gear. Whenever any nontoken creature dies, we create a 2/1 Villain token with menace. So when we sacrifice a creature we get a guy to replace it, which is great for sacrifice payoffs and an Aristocrat playstyle. It also means that an <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Plaguecrafter" href="#" target="_blank">Edict effect</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> causes three creatures to die, potentially creating three tokens for us.</p>
<p>Furthermore, with how Minotaur is worded he also acts as insurance against a board wipe. Consider the following scenario: if everyone at the table had five creatures in play, when destroyed by <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Wrath of God" href="#" target="_blank">Wrath of God</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Blasphemous Act" href="#" target="_blank">Blasphemous Act</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> we would get twenty Villain tokens, allowing us to be a serious threat after the dust settles. This position of power should allow us to broker some deals with the players at the table or outright end the game, depending on what life totals are like.</p>
<p>I am really impressed by the many ways Minotaur can be used, and I am definitely adding him to any Minotaur deck I'm building.</p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spider-Man, New Champion" href="#" target="_blank">Spider-Man, New Champion</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>
<p>After <em>Spider-Man</em> I didn't think there was much design space left to be explored for the many iterations of the web-slingers, but here I would be wrong.</p>

<p>This version of Miles Morales does a few interesting things for Minotaur decks. The least exciting is that he has reach. Minotaur decks are very weak to creatures with flying as we have few cards that can block them.</p>

<p>So Spider-Man having reach can at the very least help us with that problem.</p>
<p>The more interesting effect is that he turns our discards into targeted removal. Currently we use <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Glint-Horn Buccaneer" href="#" target="_blank">Glint-Horn Buccaneer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Magmakin Artillerist" href="#" target="_blank">Magmakin Artillerist</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to burn down our opponents with each card discarded. This is great to slowly chip down people, but it means we have to rely on spells to remove threats. Spider-Man helps solve this blind spot. Now if we were to <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Wheel of Fortune" href="#" target="_blank">wheel</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> a full hand, we can blast a threatening creature or planeswalker for seven damage. Alternatively, if there is one player that is causing problems, Spider-Man can target all the damage directly at that player, melting them down even faster.</p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ares, God of War" href="#" target="_blank">Ares, God of War</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>
<p>One of the biggest obstacles to Minotaur typal is when our creatures inevitably die. It comes with the territory of being combat-focused. Minotaurs are expensive creatures and losing them in combat can create setbacks hard to recover from. Ares has a better way.</p>

<p>The God of War (not you <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kratos, God of War" href="#" target="_blank">Kratos</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>) has decided that our attacking creatures don't die, they go back to the hand. This makes the choice to attack so much simpler, as we don't have to calculate if an attack is safe or not. Currently <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dolmen Gate" href="#" target="_blank">Dolmen Gate</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is the best tool at our disposal for keeping our Minotaurs alive, but the redundancy is appreciated.</p>
<p>Additionally, by having our dead attacking Minotaurs return to hand, it makes it a lot harder to run out of gas during a game. This is especially true if <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sethron, Hurloon General" href="#" target="_blank">Sethron</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is our commander, as we shouldn't run out of Minotaurs to play to create his Hurloon tokens, thus keeping us in the fight for a lot longer.</p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Misty Knight, Hero for Hire" href="#" target="_blank">Misty Knight, Hero for Hire</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>
<p>Something I've come to learn when writing these reviews is how important card draw is for Minotaurs. That is especially true when we build our decks around discarding our cards. Misty Knight I think will play a key part in this strategy going forward.</p>

<p>There are a lot of things going for Misty Knight as a card. She's cheap, costing only two mana, so she won't be competing with a lot of the Minotaur cards we want to be running in our deck, as Minotaurs tend to crowd around the three-mana portion of our curve.</p>
<p>Then we have her aggressive stat line. Since we can play her quickly, we can use her to start the pressure early and especially target our opponents that focus on ramping. However once people have blockers we will want to hold her back to start using her ability.</p>
<p>And her ability is what I am most interested in. For two mana we discard a card, then draw a card for every card we've discarded. This is massive, as it effectively replaces each card we've pitched, allowing us to continually have more cards to discard later. But when rummaging, cycling, or wheel effects are added into the mix, Misty Knight starts giving us card advantage.</p>
<p>I think this is going to be critical to make sure we never burn ourselves out in our discarding. One problem is that this doesn't pair well with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Neheb, the Worthy" href="#" target="_blank">Neheb, the Worthy</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, who is our usual commander for Minotaur discard decks. He wants us to have an empty hand to power up our Minotaurs. Instead, I think she'll work better with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Neheb, Dreadhorde Champion" href="#" target="_blank">Neheb, Dreadhorde Champion</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>Dreadhorde Champion is already dumping our hand when he hits an opponent. So Misty Knight allows us to completely refill the hand on top of the cards Dreadhorde draws us. Together we can churn through our cards like a machine and unlike anything else to get our discard payoffs going. It'll be a bloodbath, that's for sure.</p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cosmic Cube" href="#" target="_blank">Cosmic Cube</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>
<p>The Cosmic Cube I see being the spiciest card in the set for Minotaurs.</p>

<p>This is an artifact that has the specific ability to cast spells for free dependent on the number of creatures attacking. Given how aggressive Minotaurs are, this is an excellent tool to dig into our deck. As every time we attack, we look at the top six cards and cast a spell for free if it costs less than or equal to the number of attacking creatures. Given that most Minotaur spells fall between two or four mana we should always have something to cast.</p>
<p>This is most important for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sethron, Hurloon General" href="#" target="_blank">Sethron</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> decks, as we need to cast Minotaur spells to make the most of his ability. The more we can attack, the greater the value our Minotaurs generate. It doesn't hurt that the Cube also has ward 2 so it is harder to remove after we've played it.</p>
<p>Now consider what happens when extra combat triggers are thrown into the mix, either from cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aggravated Assault" href="#" target="_blank">Aggravated Assault</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Moraug, Fury of Akoum" href="#" target="_blank">Moraug, Fury of Akoum</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Suddenly we aren't casting one spell, we're casting multiple. Or if you're playing a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Magar of the Magic Strings" href="#" target="_blank">Magar of the Magic Strings</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> deck you can loop <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Savage Beating" href="#" target="_blank">Savage Beating</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> for infinite combat steps and keep casting greater and greater threats. But I suppose by then, you should already be winning with the infinite combats.</p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Living Laser" href="#" target="_blank">Living Laser</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>
<p>Living Laser has to be one of the funniest cards I've seen.</p>

<p>Here we have an Elemental that just makes copies of himself for all the cards we've discarded before combat. It's kind of impossible to not theory-craft how to make as many tokens as possible with him. Each token is a 4/4 with flying looking to beat people to death and then sacrifice themselves, playing into the discard and sacrifice themes of Minotaur typal.</p>
<p>Having haste is the cherry on top if you can draw into him after a Wheel and play him that turn. The best I have come up with is a having Living Laser in play alongside at least one Wheel effect, which should be enough to defeat one player at the table. Afterwards you're probably going to need the best Machiavellian tactics to survive the next turn.</p>
<p>The way I imagine it, it should only take about five discards to kill a player, by the time Living Laser can be played. So his effectiveness really is dependent on how well you're managing your hand size, alongside the classic Minotaur discard staples like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Glint-Horn Buccaneer" href="#" target="_blank">Glint-Horn Buccaneer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Monument to Endurance" href="#" target="_blank">Monument to Endurance</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Grisly Survivor" href="#" target="_blank">Grisly Survivor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Insult // Injury" href="#" target="_blank">Insult // Injury</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. But if you can make Living Laser a Minotaur through the various cards that can add creature types, such as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Maskwood Nexus" href="#" target="_blank">Maskwood Nexus</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, suddenly Living Laser becomes an armada of Minotaurs bearing the full benefit of our Minotaur lords, and should end the game right there.</p>
<h2>Conclusion</h2>
<p>And with that, classes come to a close on <em>Marvel Super Heroes</em><em>.</em> I was really impressed by how much they stuffed into this set. I think the amount of legendary creatures was overkill, but it did show just how expansive the world of Marvel is beyond what the Disney movies show us.</p>
<p>Overall, I think I like the set more than I was expecting to, especially for the support Minotaurs received, even though I personally don't care about Marvel as an IP.</p>
<p>Looking forward, not too long from now we're returning to the world of Middle-Earth with <em>The Hobbit</em>. I have high expectations after how great <em>The Lord of Rings: Tales of Middle-earth </em>was, and I'm definitely going to be rewatching all the movies leading up to it - even though I don't think we'll be getting any Minotaurs.</p>

The Best New Cards for Minotaur Typal in Marvel Super Heroes

<p>The legendary sledge known as Mjölnir is a mighty hammer. It allows its wielder to harness thunder and lightning, fly by holding its strap, and absorb energy attacks. It's also a highly selective weapon, only wielded by those deemed most worthy.</p>

<p>Of course, even though Marvel has the lion's share of "worthy" characters capable of lifting Mjölnir, so too does <em>Magic: The Gathering</em>. This article will detail the five creatures most worthy of arming themselves with the legendary hammer of Thor himself.</p>
<h2>What Does "Worthy" Really Mean?</h2>
<p>The term that pervades all talk of Thor's hammer is "worthy". The <a href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/worthy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Merriam-Webster Dictionary</a> defines this word as such:</p>
<blockquote><p>Worthy (adjective) wor-thy</p>
<p>1a: having worth or value : estimable</p>
<p><em>a worthy cause</em></p>
<p>1b: honorable, meritorious</p>
<p><em>worthy candidates</em></p>
<p>2: having sufficient worth or importance</p>
<p><em>worthy to be remembered</em></p></blockquote>
<p>This is a <em>very</em> broad term, but in the context of Marvel's canon, "Worthy" takes on a very specific meaning. In essence, an individual is deemed worthy of wielding Mjölnir if they exhibit the following traits truly and wholly:</p>
<ul>
<li>The wielder must display courage in the face of adversity.</li>
<li>The wielder must be resolute in their convictions and display no self-doubt.</li>
<li>Despite being a warrior, they must display compassion and empathy.</li>
<li>Finally, they must prioritize the greater good of society over the individual.</li>
</ul>
<p>We see a few examples of this in Marvel's canon, such as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Thor Odinson" href="#" target="_blank">Thor Odinson</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, naturally, and Steve Rogers, also known as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Captain America, Steve Rogers" href="#" target="_blank">Captain</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<h3>Mjölnir Beyond <em>Magic</em></h3>
<p>In this article, I would like to set a ground rule that we will not be looking at "worthy" figures from <em>Universes Beyond</em>. The <em>Universes Beyond</em> suite of legendary creatures sets the subset of mechanically eligible legends too broad for anyone to sanely examine in its entirety.</p>
<p>That said, here is a short list of eligible (non-Marvel) <em>Universes Beyond</em> legendary creatures one might deem "worthy" (noting that I can't profess to know all of these canons perfectly):</p>

<p>At this stage, there are still an absolute metric ton of eligible legends. What's more, a ton of them are really valid to wield Mjölnir from a mechanical standpoint. Even removing <em>Universes Beyond</em> <em>and</em> the less-relevant legends won't narrow things down to the five most worthy legendary creatures. What's a poor author to do?</p>
<h3>The Morals of Mjölnir</h3>
<p>At this stage, we're going to have to narrow things down the same way the Marvel writers did when originally penning the character of Thor: by determining characters' subjective morality. I will stress that this is a weird line, and some of <em>Magic</em>'s most morally corrupt characters exist in red, white, and multicolor in all manner of measures. For instance, <span class="edhrecp__link side-by-side"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Nicol Bolas, the Ravager" href="#" target="_blank">Nicol Bolas, the Ravager</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is one-hundred percent not worthy of wielding Thor's hammer.</p>
<p>For the sake of reasonable completion, however, the following legendary creatures within the red and white color identity are also unworthy of Mjölnir:</p>

<p>I know this was a super-lengthy explanation to specifically exclude a ton of legends from this listicle. I also excluded non-red, non-white creatures from the final list. To look over all of them would lead me to madness, to be certain. However, this was all necessary before we get into the nitty-gritty of examining those who <em>are</em> worthy. So, without any further ado, let's do exactly that! Our first worthy legend is...</p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aurelia, the Warleader" href="#" target="_blank">Aurelia, the Warleader</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>The Ravnican guildmaster Aurelia is an exemplar of the conviction and confidence needed to be a Boros Legion guildmember. She is resolute in her values, and those values are exactly what Mjölnir values in a wielder. In essence, her zeal and devotion towards the guild are exactly what would make her worthy of arming herself with the fabled Asgardian hammer.</p>
<p>Mechanically, Aurelia's ability to create additional combat steps makes her a prime candidate to equip with Mjölnir. Doubling damage all over the place is a great effect to put on something that can continue to double things all around. (See <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Heartless Hidetsugu" href="#" target="_blank">Heartless Hidetsugu</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, who, despite not being morally worthy, is <em>very</em> mechanically worthy.) This list will only include Aurelia in terms of double phases, but doubling damage in other ways is still applicable. Take, for instance...</p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kellan, the Fae-Blooded" href="#" target="_blank">Kellan, the Fae-Blooded</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>Kellan is a character who is relatively mutable in his convictions over the course of his character development. He's done a helluva lot of different things and taken many different roles in his life. As an illegitimate child of Oko, one might assume that he is unworthy of wielding Mjölnir. However, I want to stress that Kellan is just as noble and resolute as the hammer mandates in its wielders throughout his plotline.</p>
<p>Mechanically speaking, Kellan's card comes with an Adventure that can search up Mjölnir from the deck for use later on. Furthermore, Kellan boosts the board's power simply by attaching the hammer to him. That seems like a pretty good way to convey selflessness, if you ask me!</p>
<p>Now, when we talk about character arcs shifting and shaping characters in a way that deems them worthy of Thor's mighty hammer, there are a lot. In fact, there's one truly mighty character who, while not immediately worthy, becomes worthy later in his life.</p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kamahl, Pit Fighter" href="#" target="_blank">Kamahl, Pit Fighter</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>If there's one storyline that I know well, it's the twin blocks of <em>Odyssey</em> and <em>Onslaught</em>. The Mirari Cycle is a huge favorite of mine, mostly due to the character of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chainer, Dementia Master" href="#" target="_blank">Chainer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> (who is <em>definitely</em> not worthy). But also of note is his best friend and the protagonist of five of these six stories, the Pardic barbarian Kamahl. Kamahl succumbs to the wiles of the <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mirari" href="#" target="_blank">Mirari</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and that's decidedly not a worthy thing to do. However, he grows past this and abandons his violent ways for a time as a druid of the Krosan Forest. Eventually his destiny leads him to destroying a (practical) goddess, the being called Karona, to restore Dominaria's magic. If that isn't remarkably selfless and with the greater good in mind, I don't know what is.</p>
<p>Mechanically, however, we have to look at his older iteration. This card existed while he was, in essence, a soldier of fortune, looking for glory and riches through gladiatorial combat in the Otarian pits. But let's shelve that discussion and look at his card from <em>Odyssey</em>. Kamahl is a 6/1 with haste who can tap to deal 3 damage to any target. With Mjölnir in hand, Kamahl can make that 3 damage into 6. Add to that the fact that he's a 6-power creature, and you're able to deal a <em>lot</em> of damage at virtually any time.</p>
<p>Moving on, we have the most worthy humanoid on this list:</p>

<p>The Mirran Goldwarden Jor Kadeen was one of the characters from the Mirrodin-New Phyrexian war who survived through the full corruption of the metallic plane. This character never gave up on Mirrodin even while his kinsmen succumbed to the <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Glistening Oil" href="#" target="_blank">Glistening Oil</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Truly, Jor Kadeen is a true force in the context of that iconic conflict.</p>
<p>When we talk about mechanical prowess, Jor Kadeen is great because he's already a fantastically strong creature in his own right. He doesn't <em>need</em> Mjölnir to make things hard for his opponents. While he does need three artifacts out, Mjölnir just helps - it isn't necessary. Nevertheless, dealing 16 damage per attack is a great justification for Jor Kadeen to wield the hammer.</p>
<p>Finally, we have probably the most worthy creature I can think of.</p>

<p>Mjölnir doesn't particularly care what creature wields it, as long as it is worthy of doing so. That's likely why Throg (of the <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Pet Avengers" href="#" target="_blank">Pet Avengers</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>) is at all allowed to exist in the <em>Marvel</em> canon. So, what's to say that <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Phelia, Exuberant Shepherd" href="#" target="_blank">Phelia, Exuberant Shepherd</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is an unworthy creature? In terms of <em>Magic</em>'s canon, this information is largely irrelevant. Dogs are <em>clearly</em> inherently kind souls, and often fiercely loyal to others. I will thereby stand by my statement that Phelia is the single most worthy creature to wield Mjölnir, from a moral standpoint.</p>
<p>Mechanically, Phelia is very able to blink the Equipment on a pretty consistent basis, dealing a hefty 4 damage to something in the process. Fetch! <em>Good girl</em>. That's something that really works in thematic ways, but also proves highly effective in the context of the game itself. And morality aside, that really works as another reason that Phelia is worthy.</p>

<p>I don't know <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ragost, Deft Gastronaut" href="#" target="_blank">Ragost, Deft Gastronaut</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>'s moral leanings, so I have to give the Lobster Chef an Honorable Mention here, sadly. I know a lot of you may be shocked that he's not on the list proper, but them's the breaks! Mechanically, however, much has been said in a bunch of places about how good Ragost is with holding Mjölnir, especially when sacrificing Food for fun and profit. I defer to the experts here, but he's not necessarily worthy by the canonical definitions of the terminology. Regardless, Ragost has the gameplay aspect of things going for him!</p>
<h2>Conclusion</h2>
<p>Regardless of what your values lead you to believe, I think I can speak for all of us when I say these creatures are all worthy in some way or another of lifting Mjölnir. It's definitely a fun thought exercise to consider what's available, at least.</p>

<p>On Thursday, June 4th, Wizards of the Coast announced that there will be product delays for sealed <em>Marvel Super Heroes</em> cards. These delays affect multiple regions globally and will not be fully rectified before the June 26th release date of the set. Read on to see if your part of the world is affected.</p>
<h2>Wizards of the Coast's Statement on <em>Marvel Super Heroes</em> Delays</h2>
<p>Here's what to expect from the delays, according to Wizards of the Coast:</p>
<h3>North America</h3>
<blockquote><p>Bundles, Commander decks, and Jumpstart Boosters will be delayed. Collector's Edition Commander decks are expected after the set's release. Welcome Decks will be delayed with available quantities prioritized for stores that previously scheduled Avengers Academy events. All other products are on schedule.</p></blockquote>

Because this keeps happening, there's little we as consumers can necessarily do, except keep that recurrence in mind for the future.</p>

Marvel Super Heroes Previews Begin Today

<p>On Tuesday, Wizards of the Coast unveiled the new sealed products for two upcoming sets. These sets are <em>Secrets of Strixhaven</em> and <em>Marvel Super Heroes</em>. This particular set of previews was revealed at the Nuremberg Toy Fair in Germany. With that, let's look at some of the revealed information, which includes a few preview cards!</p>
<h2><em>Secrets of Strixhaven</em></h2>
<p>For starters, let's look at <em>Secrets of Strixhaven</em>, out on April 24th. Wizards of the Coast revealed the following products at the Nuremberg Toy Fair. Some of these may seem obvious, but it's simply good to know that they're continuing:</p>

<p>We expect you have a few questions. For one, what in the world is a Codex Bundle? And, how many Commander decks are featuring in <em>MTGSOS</em>? We can easily answer both of those questions for you!</p>
<p>The Codex Bundle, a similar product to Gift Bundles and the like, contains six Play Boosters, two Collector Boosters, and a Codex Booster. Like the <em>Avatar: The Last Airbender</em> Gift Bundles' innovation, the Codex Booster contains two cards out of a possible six in the following subset of cards:</p>

<p>Whenever a legendary creature is revealed in <em>Magic</em> previews, even ahead of its set's preview season, there will always be someone hoping to build it in Commander. Let's face facts: There's always someone who wants to be ahead of the curve. Trendsetters exist, plain and simple.</p>
<p>But what happens when a set like <a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/msh" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Marvel Super Heroes</em></a> gets previews? The property is clearly popular among comic book fans of many walks of life (except maybe for DC Comics diehards, but we won't get into that here). But are the legendary creatures <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/marvel-super-heroes-a-first-look-at-the-new-set" target="_blank" rel="noopener">previewed on December 9th</a> exciting enough to build around?</p>
<p>According to our data, one shone above the rest in the past 24 hours, so let's dive into that analysis!</p>
<h2>Spoiler Alert: It Ain't <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Namor the Sub-Mariner" href="#" target="_blank">Namor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>
<p>While cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Namor the Sub-Mariner" href="#" target="_blank">Namor the Sub-Mariner</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> are, in fact, behind the most prolific <em>Marvel Super Heroes</em> legend previewed yesterday, the numbers are actually not close at all.</p>
<p>Right now, <span class="edhrecp__link side-by-side"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bruce Banner" href="#" target="_blank">Bruce Banner</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, also known as The Incredible Hulk, leads 82 Commander decks databased by EDHREC. Namor, as well as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Doctor Doom" href="#" target="_blank">Doctor Doom</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, both lead 19 decks. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Baron Helmut Zemo" href="#" target="_blank">Baron Helmut Zemo</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> leads 18 decks, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Super-Skrull" href="#" target="_blank">Super-Skrull</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> commands a measly nine decks.</p>

<h2>The Breakdown of <em>Marvel Super Heroes</em> Commanders</h2>
<p>Why is this? There are a variety of reasons that the lower four of the top five decks are doing so poorly. There are also several reasons that Bruce Banner is doing so well:</p>
<ul>
<li>Doctor Doom costs a <em>lot</em> of mana to cast. Right now, mana value three is the new mana value four in terms of ideal maximum mana value for a commander. As a consequence of this upswing in speed, a mana value of six often has no place in the command zone.</li>
<li>Namor has to deal with a ton of competition in the Merfolk typal department. Granted, this fact may be affected (or eclipsed) by how much we see from <a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/ecl" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Lorwyn Eclipsed</em></a>. He's decent and could work very nicely in any Merfolk pile's 99. However, as a monocolor legend, other legendary creatures with more colors at their disposal can often offer better resources for Merfolk themes.</li>
<li>Zemo is going to have stiff competition as well. Other mono-black commanders often recur cards, and they don’t exile to do it, especially with less of a devotion theme. Even at an easy mana value of three, players will inevitably prefer commanders like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Toshiro Umezawa" href="#" target="_blank">Toshiro Umezawa</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kaervek, the Punisher" href="#" target="_blank">Kaervek, the Punisher</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> (a card with a potentially ironic epithet considering the source material we're talking about). Even at a higher mana value, some players might even prefer <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chainer, Dementia Master" href="#" target="_blank">Chainer, Dementia Master</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Heck, even <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed" href="#" target="_blank">Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is more conservative of resources if their playgroup is more chill with certain practices.</li>
</ul>

<li>Super-Skrull has to contend with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kenrith, the Returned King" href="#" target="_blank">Kenrith, the Returned King</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, who is infinitely easier to cast and already has precedent as a massively popular commander. Currently, Kenrith is fighting tooth and nail to stay at the very bottom of the <a href="https://edhrec.com/commanders" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Top 10 Most Popular Commanders on EDHREC</a> (<span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Y&#039;shtola, Night&#039;s Blessed" href="#" target="_blank">Y&#039;shtola, Night&#039;s Blessed</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is close to outpacing him, however, and we will report on that when she does). For whatever it's worth, both Kenrith and Super-Skrull can kill while on an infinite mana bender. However, since Kenrith only costs one white pip and the rest in generic mana, Kenrith does it way more easily.</li>

<h2>We Have a Hulk</h2>
<p>As for why Bruce Banner and The Incredible Hulk break this trend of semi-mediocre commanders so handily, one need only watch the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-Xnuym1wqY" target="_blank" rel="noopener">WeeklyMTG stream from yesterday</a>.</p>
<p>In it, Blake Rasmussen, Rachel Weeks, and Gabriel Luna go on pretty extensively about the ways you can combo off with the Hulk. These include the use of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Pyrohemia" href="#" target="_blank">Pyrohemia</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Caltrops" href="#" target="_blank">Caltrops</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to engage in either infinite or near-infinite combat steps with the Hulk.</p>
<p>In related news, the uncommon <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Caltrops" href="#" target="_blank">Caltrops</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> spiked (if you'll pardon the wordplay) yesterday to almost $11. The foil iteration of Caltrops from <em>Seventh Edition</em> also skyrocketed to $108. This was almost certainly due to the stream's discussion of the card.</p>

<p>Does this mean anything for a card that comes out in June? It may be too early to tell, honestly. But frankly, my takeaway is that, even if Wizards of the Coast is unable to acknowledge the secondary market, they should play a bit less loose with cards that can soar like Caltrops now has.</p>
<p>Regardless of the spikes, Bruce Banner is clearly a hit with some Commander players. We'll have to see how well that sticks before June, but either way, the card is good.</p>
