<p>Hello, everyone, my name's Jonathan and today I'll be going over <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Uugguu, the Omniplasm" href="#" target="_blank">Uugguu, the Omniplasm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, one of the commanders spoiled for the expansion <em>Mystery Booster Commander Edition</em>.</p>

<h2>The Commander</h2>

<p>This commander gets more interesting the more you look at it. On the surface it's just an Ooze general, which is something we were still missing but not anything groundbreaking. But then, the subthemes start to emerge, spanning from <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/tokens">Tokens</a> to <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/sacrifice">Sacrifice</a> and <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/reanimator">Reanimation</a>. And just like that, a pretty generic commander becomes intriguing and open to multiple builds.</p>
<p>Today, I'll be going over my first draft for this deck, but then I'll be highlighting alternative options that people have started brewing. In this way you'll have a broader overview of what the possibilities are with this card as we wait for its release.</p>

<h2>The Creatures</h2>

<p>The pool of available Ooze creatures is surprisingly deep, to the point that it's possible to actually select the ones you're including in your deck (and this can't be said for every creature type). In fact, before even starting to talk about subthemes, there are quite a few cards that are simply good with the commander.</p>
<p>Starting with an oldie, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Biowaste Blob" href="#" target="_blank">Biowaste Blob</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> has finally found a stable home. During each of your turns it'll propagate and grow your entire board, but this is old news. What's interesting now is how well it synergizes with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Uugguu, the Omniplasm" href="#" target="_blank">Uugguu, the Omniplasm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, to the point that it might as well gain hexproof. In fact, killing it won't stop the chain of creatures, but rather increase even more its growing speed.</p>
<p>Next is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mitotic Slime" href="#" target="_blank">Mitotic Slime</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, another card that usually struggles outside dedicated token decks. Nonetheless, the number of creatures it can create with this new general is simply outrageous, giving an enormous boost to any creatures-matter card we have.</p>
<p>Lastly, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Acidic Slime" href="#" target="_blank">Acidic Slime</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is the first card I thought about when crafting the deck list. It's way too expensive for a removal spell in modern <em>Magic</em>, I know. But when you can get its effect <em>three</em> times, even the 2/2 stat line isn't that bad after all.</p>

<h2>+1/+1 Counters</h2>

<p>One of the secondary themes I decided to include in my list is +1/+1 counters, which pairs well with the go-wide idea present both in our commander and a decent amount of other creatures. Also, keep in mind our goal is to get two copies of each of the creatures we play.</p>
<p>We will start with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Oran-Rief Ooze" href="#" target="_blank">Oran-Rief Ooze</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, which will grow our board turn after turn. This is because we can attack with it recklessly as long as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Uugguu, the Omniplasm" href="#" target="_blank">Uugguu, the Omniplasm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is on the battlefield to get both of its triggered abilities going.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aeve, Progenitor Ooze" href="#" target="_blank">Aeve, Progenitor Ooze</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> was the previous Ooze commander, although with a storm flavor. Here it can simply be a huge creature, splitting into more copies of itself both with storm <em>and</em> our commander.</p>
<p>On a similar note, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Biogenic Ooze" href="#" target="_blank">Biogenic Ooze</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> benefits from being copied too. It'll put counters on our board while also being able to grow itself. Its feeble stat line usually is a drawback, but here it only means it's easier to duplicate this creature.</p>

<h2>Sacrifice Subtheme</h2>

<p>As I said at the beginning of the article, there are many strategies you can build around when creating your own list. Mine develops a self-sacrifice theme. In particular, I built it around cards such as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Corrupted Conviction" href="#" target="_blank">Corrupted Conviction</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Not Dead After All" href="#" target="_blank">Not Dead After All</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. In this way, you can use your creatures for value, get them back and also get two additional copies of them.</p>

<p>Repeatable sacrifice outlets are particularly good, as they make chaining creatures even easier. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Evolutionary Leap" href="#" target="_blank">Evolutionary Leap</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> brings us from one creature to the next with no effort, making sure we both have sacrifice fodder and a sacrifice outlet. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ashnod&#039;s Altar" href="#" target="_blank">Ashnod&#039;s Altar</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a classic staple, giving us two colorless mana for each creature we sacrifice, which is never a bad rate. Finally, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Greater Good" href="#" target="_blank">Greater Good</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> transforms creatures into cards so that we never run out of gas.</p>

<p>In the typal synergies department, it's all about recursion and additional triggers.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Unbury" href="#" target="_blank">Unbury</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Raise the Draugr" href="#" target="_blank">Raise the Draugr</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Return from Extinction" href="#" target="_blank">Return from Extinction</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> all allow us to recover our fallen Oozes, which we are more than happy to see (and sacrifice) again.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Haunted One" href="#" target="_blank">Haunted One</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Patriarch&#039;s Bidding" href="#" target="_blank">Patriarch&#039;s Bidding</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Haunting Voyage" href="#" target="_blank">Haunting Voyage</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> go a step even further, making sure our creatures come back to the battlefield ready to fight over and over again.</p>
<p>Finally, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Roaming Throne" href="#" target="_blank">Roaming Throne</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Reflections of Littjara" href="#" target="_blank">Reflections of Littjara</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> are insane value engines, doubling up on creatures and/or permanents to overwhelm our opponents with our board state.</p>

Add some usual suspects like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Viscera Seer" href="#" target="_blank">Viscera Seer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Zulaport Cutthroat" href="#" target="_blank">Zulaport Cutthroat</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and enjoy this trigger galore.</p>

All of them count as Oozes for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Uugguu, the Omniplasm" href="#" target="_blank">Uugguu, the Omniplasm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, thus they'll come back twice as strong from the dead. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mutable Explorer" href="#" target="_blank">Mutable Explorer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will give us lands, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chomping Changeling" href="#" target="_blank">Chomping Changeling</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> some interaction and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Graveshifter" href="#" target="_blank">Graveshifter</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> recursion.</p>

<p>This past weekend during Gen Con, Wizards of the Coast revealed the contents of <em>Mystery Booster Commander Edition</em>, a new Mystery Booster product only obtainable during MagicCon events (and in Festival in a Box products to come). This reveal showcased a total of 60 new Commander-legal legendary cards, all usable as commanders. Let's look at all of these awesome cards!</p>
<h2><em>Mystery Booster Commander Edition</em> New White Cards</h2>

<p>There are (at least!) two important things to note with these new reveals. One is that there is an absolute glut of new planeswalker commanders. This will surely make Superfriends decks very happy. The second thing is that there are so many deep cuts in the lore among these cards that the diehard lore fans (or, as they prefer, "Vorthoses") are already going mad over this release. But in the meantime, let's move on with blue!</p>
<h2>New Blue Cards</h2>

<p>There are eight cards in this subset from the release that have the "rulebreaker" mechanic. Tolabow, Loch Rascal was revealed early on, and there was some confusion about how it actually works. So, Wizards of the Coast has provided functional errata to the card to allow one additional color altogether, and the card's Oracle text references color identity rather than color. <a href="https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/announcements/update-to-tolabow-loch-rascals-rules-text" target="_blank" rel="noopener">You can read about that errata here!</a></p>

<p>There was for a long time an issue with getting Brandon Sanderson's <em>Magic</em> novel, <em>Children of the Nameless</em>, out to readers. I am unsure if that still stands, but <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Miss Highwater" href="#" target="_blank">Miss Highwater</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a character from that novel, which bodes well for the book itself, because it's an excellent read.</p>

<p>I'm not entirely certain why white, blue, and green got so many fewer cards than red or black when it comes to new monocolor cards, but as a Rakdos fan, I'm not complaining. On to the rest of 'em!</p>
